What are you actually spitting down that sink?

Already in 2014 a Swedish master student wrote a fully detailed report investigating the question: “IS TOOTHPASTE AN ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD?” and the results speak for themselves.

Many particles were found in different types of toothpastes that are simply toxic to aquatic organisms and therefore have negative long-term effects on the environment. (https://www.bioenv.gu.se/digitalAssets/1480/1480510_hilma-samuelsson.pdf)

Imagine all of those chemicals being spit down the sink, many times daily, and their impact they have with polluting the water lifecycle. This is considerable, since people spend on average 3.000 hours brushing their teeth in their lifetime!

For example, the germ- killing chemical Triclosan is known to have some questionable side effects. Some are that it disrupts the growth and development of marine animals and bacteria. By the way, Triclosan is registered as a pesticide. That should make you already think twice. On a better note, by now many toothpaste companies have already banned Triclosan from their list of ingredients. (https://moose-oarfish-2n3x.squarespace.com/config/pages/5ead9b167b605f29245a1881)

So there are definitely some interesting facts that you should consider about your toothpaste.
